Navigating Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day! This can be one of the most tempting days of the year. Chocolate looms everywhere, and honestly, it looks and smells so good. Let’s see how to apply some health essentials and tips to determine how to make Valentine’s healthier, while still enjoying the day.

First of all, choosing health doesn’t mean you will never eat a piece of chocolate again. That plan would be unsustainable for most of us mortals. However, it does mean that you and I can put a plan into place to keep us from overindulging on any holiday or special occasion. Before I share these tips, remember to avoid judging yourself when it comes to food – especially in using the terms “good or bad”.

Instead, I like what Chris Wark says about these types of foods being “recreational”. This means that occasionally, on a special day, one can enjoy a small amount of  “recreational” food without guilt. This may include a piece of chocolate or a small piece of cake. However, note the word occasional. (You can find out more about Chris Wark on his website at chrisbeatcancer.com).

For me, the goal is that most of the time I make every effort to choose to consume healthier foods, but occasionally, I have something else. The point is, when I do decide to have a food on the unhealthier side, I also choose not to judge myself. Rather, I make the choice to enjoy it, because I know that this is a rare treat.

In pursuing better health, I continue to practice several of the essentials I am passing on to you – especially during any type of holiday or special occasion. So, 95% of the time I aim to choose nutritious foods, leaving a small percentage to the rest. Also, I’ve noticed that when I leave the judgment behind, it keeps me from going backwards on my health journey.

Here are some of the essentials I put into practice during special holidays like Valentine’s Day:

  • Use a smaller plate at home.
  • When given the choice at a restaurant, choose the smaller portion.
  • Pack up half of your food if in a restaurant.
  • Remember the phrase, “I can have that but choose not to”.
  • Increase your steps.
  • Avoid second helpings.

When tempted today with chocolates, cakes, and candy remember these health essentials –  keep going!
